How Clean AC Filters Can Slash Energy Costs in Commercial Buildings

The Hidden Cost of Dirty AC Filters in Commercial Buildings

If your Brisbane, Gold Coast commercial air conditioning system runs constantly—but your energy bills keep rising—it might be time to look at a commonly neglected component: the filters.

In commercial systems, especially those using bag filters or multi-stage filtration setups, dirty filters don’t just reduce air quality—they force your system to work harder, using more electricity than necessary.

Let’s explore how keeping your filters clean can lower power usage and extend the life of your HVAC system.

Why Dirty Filters Drive Up Energy Costs

When air filters become clogged with dust, debris, or biological contaminants, they create resistance to airflow. Your air handling unit (AHU) or fan must then use more energy to push the same volume of air through the system. The result? Increased electricity consumption, reduced efficiency, and higher operational costs.

In systems with bag filters—designed for high dust-holding capacity—this resistance can build up gradually and often goes unnoticed until:

  • The system strains under load

  • Fan motors overheat

  • Cooling output drops

  • Energy bills spike

The Role of Bag Filters in Commercial HVAC

Bag filters (also called pocket filters) are common in large-scale HVAC systems for commercial buildings, shopping centres, schools, and healthcare facilities. Their purpose is to trap fine dust and airborne particles, often as part of a two- or three-stage filtration setup.

While effective, bag filters can retain large amounts of particulate matter, especially in urban or industrial areas like Brisbane and the Gold Coast. If not maintained, they become a bottleneck—literally and financially.

Energy Savings from Clean Filters: What the Data Says

According to the U.S. Department of Energy and similar Australian studies:

  • Replacing or cleaning clogged filters can reduce HVAC energy consumption by 5% to 15%.

  • In high-use commercial systems, that can equate to thousands of dollars per year.

  • Clean filters also reduce wear and tear on fan motors, compressors, and other system components.

Signs It’s Time to Clean or Replace Your Filters

  • Higher-than-usual electricity bills

  • Reduced airflow at outlets

  • Cold or hot spots in the building

  • Unusual noise from AHUs or fans

  • Dust build-up around vents or return air grills

Disintegrated and filthy HVAC filter from a commercial venue, showing the result of years of neglected maintenance by a low-cost competitor.
This is what happens to filters when they are not changed – they fall apart!

Best Practices for Filter Maintenance

  1. Inspect Filters Monthly – Especially during high-usage seasons.

  2. Use Pressure Differential Gauges – These measure resistance across filters and signal when replacement is needed.

  3. Schedule Regular Replacements – For bag filters, this is typically every 3–6 months depending on use and environment.

  4. Implement a Preventative Maintenance Plan – At ACRO Refrigeration, we offer PMAs that include scheduled filter inspections and replacements tailored to your building’s needs.

Cleaner Filters, Greener Buildings

Reducing your electricity consumption doesn’t always require major upgrades—sometimes, it’s as simple as keeping your filters clean. With energy costs rising and environmental regulations tightening, improving HVAC efficiency is both a smart business move and a step toward sustainability.

📞 Contact ACRO Refrigeration today on 1300 227 600 to discuss a tailored maintenance plan that keeps your filters clean and your energy bills down.

Preventing Mould in Ice Machines: A Hidden Risk for Brisbane and Gold Coast Businesses

Mould in Ice Machines: A Silent Contaminant in Humid Climates

If you operate a café, restaurant, bar, or venue on the Gold Coast or in Brisbane, chances are your ice machine is working overtime. But in Queensland’s humid subtropical climate, that hard-working appliance could be hiding a problem you can’t afford to ignore: mould growth.

Why Ice Machines Are Prone to Mould

Mould thrives in warm, moist environments—exactly the conditions found in many commercial kitchens. Add in airborne yeast from bread, alcohol vapours from bar service, and infrequent cleaning, and your ice machine becomes a breeding ground.

Even though ice is cold, the inside of an ice machine often contains:

  • Warm, damp air when the door is opened frequently

  • Condensation that accumulates on walls and components

  • Residual organic material that feeds microbial growth

Mould in Ice Machine

Risks of Mould in Ice Machines

Mould in ice machines is not just unsightly—it’s a hygiene and health hazard. Mould spores can contaminate ice, which is then served to customers in drinks or used in food preparation. In severe cases, this can lead to:

  • Complaints of off-tasting ice

  • Food safety breaches

  • Illness in vulnerable customers

  • Damage to your business’s reputation

Brisbane and Gold Coast: A Perfect Storm for Mould

Queensland’s high humidity, especially during summer, accelerates mould growth. Coastal businesses near Surfers Paradise, Southport, Brisbane CBD, and even hinterland areas like Tamborine or Samford often struggle to keep moisture levels low enough to prevent mould from taking hold.

Mould in Ice Machine

How to Prevent Mould in Your Ice Machine

Fortunately, with regular maintenance and a proactive approach, mould can be kept at bay:

  1. Schedule Routine Cleaning
Ice machines should be thoroughly cleaned and sanitised at least every 6 months—more often in high-use environments. This includes cleaning:

    • The bin interior

    • Ice chute and dispenser

    • Condenser coil

    • Water lines and filters

  2. Use the Right Cleaning Products
Avoid using general-purpose cleaners. Use only manufacturer-approved ice machine cleaning solutions that effectively target biofilm and mould.

  3. Ensure Proper Ventilation
Make sure your machine is installed in a well-ventilated area, with adequate airflow to reduce humidity build-up.

  4. Sign Up for Preventative Maintenance
ACRO Refrigeration offers Preventative Maintenance Agreements (PMAs) that include scheduled deep cleaning and inspections. This takes the pressure off your staff and ensures compliance with food safety standards.

Protect Your Customers. Protect Your Brand.

Mould in ice machines is a problem that many business owners simply aren’t aware of—until it’s too late. If you’re operating in Brisbane or the Gold Coast, don’t wait for a customer complaint or a failed inspection. Talk to our team today about setting up a cleaning and maintenance schedule that keeps your ice clean, clear, and safe.

How to Maintain Cold Chain Integrity in High-Volume Kitchens

How to Maintain Cold Chain Integrity in High-Volume Kitchens

In fast-paced Brisbane and Gold Coast commercial kitchens, especially those in hotels, hospitals, aged care, or airline catering, cold chain integrity isn’t just a best practice — it’s a compliance requirement. A single breakdown in temperature control can compromise food safety, risk customer health, and lead to regulatory consequences.

Here’s how high-volume kitchens can maintain uncompromising cold chain integrity, day in and day out.

✅ 1. Understand What’s at Stake

Cold chain integrity refers to maintaining consistent, safe temperatures for perishable items from delivery through storage and preparation. When the chain is broken — even briefly — bacteria can multiply, food can spoil, and your HACCP plan could be breached.

Consequences include:

  • Food poisoning or spoilage

  • Failed audits

  • Regulatory penalties

  • Brand damage

🧰 2. Use Commercial-Grade Equipment (and Maintain It)

Not all fridges are created equal. High-volume kitchens need purpose-built commercial refrigeration systems — not repurposed residential units.

Best practices:

  • Choose units with high ambient temperature ratings

  • Use fridge/freezer combo units only where absolutely necessary

  • Stick to top-tier brands with reliable service history

  • Partner with a provider (like ACRO) offering 24/7 support and fast part replacement

📋 3. Maintain a Valid Preventative Maintenance Agreement (PMA)

A compliant kitchen isn’t reactive — it’s proactive.

  • Ensure systems are checked quarterly

  • Include temperature calibration, door seal inspections, and refrigerant checks

  • Keep signed PMA documentation on file for audit purposes

With ACRO’s PMA clients, we ensure:

  • Same-day service

  • Access to spare parts

  • Compliance-focused reporting

🧊 4. Monitor & Record Temperatures Daily

Manual logs and automated sensors are both valid, but choose a system you’ll actually use. For high-volume kitchens, we recommend:

  • Daily checks at opening and closing

  • Backup data logging systems

  • Alarms for temperature drift or open doors

  • Audit-ready logbooks or digital records

🧽 5. Train Staff (Then Train Again)

Even the best refrigeration system can’t protect the cold chain if your team leaves a door open or places hot stock inside the fridge.

Train all staff on:

  • First in, first out (FIFO) principles

  • Acceptable delivery temperatures

  • Proper fridge loading (no overpacking!)

  • Reporting suspected equipment faults

🛡️ BONUS: Ask for a Cold Chain Review

Every kitchen is different. Our team of HACCP-compliant refrigeration specialists offers tailored cold chain reviews for kitchens in Brisbane and the Gold Coast. We identify risks before they become disasters — saving you money, downtime, and stress.

Top Mistakes We See in Cheap Cold Room Installations (And How to Avoid Them)

Top Mistakes We See in Cheap Cold Room Installations (And How to Avoid Them)

When it comes to cold room installations, cutting corners to save money can end up being a very expensive decision. At ACRO Refrigeration, we’ve repaired, rebuilt, and replaced hundreds of cold rooms across Brisbane and the Gold Coast—and we’ve seen first hand what happens when businesses go for the cheapest quote instead of the most reliable one.

Here are the top mistakes we see in low-cost cold room installations, and how you can avoid them:

1. Undersized Refrigeration Systems

The issue: Cheap installers often fit a unit that’s too small for the actual load or usage pattern to keep costs down.
The result: The fridge struggles to reach temperature, runs 24/7, breaks down frequently, and uses more power.

Our advice: Always have a refrigeration specialist properly size your system based on heat load, product turnover, room size, insulation, and door usage.

2. Poor Insulation or Panel Quality

The issue: Inferior panels or incorrect installation (e.g. poor sealing, unlevel floors) allow warm air to leak into the cold room.
The result: Ice build-up, temperature fluctuations, and higher running costs.

Our advice: Use high-quality panels with tight interlocking seals, and ensure all wall, ceiling, and floor joints are properly finished.

3. No Vapour Barrier or Drainage Consideration

The issue: Some budget installations skip proper vapour barriers or don’t slope floors for drainage.
The result: Moisture intrusion, mould, water damage, and hygiene risks.

Our advice: Cold rooms must include proper vapour barriers and floor gradients to comply with food safety and building standards.

4. Incorrect Thermostat Placement

The issue: We often see thermostats placed too close to the evaporator coil or in dead zones.
The result: Inaccurate temperature readings and failed compliance with HACCP standards.

Our advice: Thermostats and probes should be positioned where the average air temp reflects actual product conditions—not just cold air circulation points.

5. No Room for Maintenance Access

The issue: In tight installs, units are sometimes boxed in with no space to safely access fan motors, compressors, or drains.
The result: Major service costs down the track or the need to remove parts of the cold room just to do basic repairs.

Our advice: Design for access. We always leave enough room for servicing, gas top-ups, and future upgrades.

6. Non-Compliant Electrical or Lighting Work

The issue: Cheap installs often involve cutting costs on electrical work. This could mean poor wiring, exposed terminals, or non-food-safe lights.
The result: Fire risk, blown circuits, or food safety compliance issues.

Our advice: All electrical components should be installed by a licensed electrician and meet food service requirements (e.g. IP-rated LED lights).

7. No Commissioning or Handover

The issue: We’ve seen installs where the system is simply switched on with no run-in period, logging, or explanation to the customer.
The result: Early failure, missed setup faults, or systems running inefficiently for years.

Our advice: A professional install includes commissioning, testing, and client handover—so you know exactly how to operate and monitor your system.

Don’t Let a Cheap Cold Room Cost You More

A cold room is a critical asset—especially in foodservice, retail, and hospitality. A poorly installed system will cost more in power, breakdowns, and stock loss over time than a quality system ever would upfront.

At ACRO Refrigeration, we specialise in commercial cold room design, installation, and maintenance across Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Our systems are built to last—and to meet the food safety and operational demands of your business.

When you partner with Acro In Brisbane and Gold Coast, you’re not just getting a contractor — you’re working with a team that embodies discipline, responsiveness, and trust, built on a foundation of service.

🎙️ Interview with Paul – Director of Acro Refrigeration

Veteran-Owned. Brisbane-Born. Service-Driven.

Q: Paul, you’ve had a career that spans the Army Reserve, frontline policing, and now business leadership. How have those experiences shaped the way you run Acro?
Paul:
All those roles had one thing in common — the need to deliver under pressure. When a commercial fridge goes down in a busy kitchen on the Gold Coast, or a cool room fails in Brisbane, our clients can’t afford delays or excuses. We show up fast, with the right parts, and get it sorted. That discipline, attention to detail, and commitment to service — it’s something I’ve carried across from the Army and police into Acro.

Q: Why did you choose to position Acro as a veteran-owned business?
Paul:
Because it reflects how we think and operate. We’re structured, reliable, and results-focused. Veterans understand accountability, teamwork, and service — all of which translate directly into how we support our clients. Acro is a proud member of the Veteran Community Business Chamber and a participant in the Department of Veterans’ Affairs Veteran Employment Program, which reflects our commitment to supporting and employing ex-service personnel.

VCBC Veteran Business
Certified Veteran Business

Q: What do you want clients in Brisbane and the Gold Coast to know about Acro?
Paul:
That we back our work. We offer a 5-year workmanship guarantee — well beyond the manufacturer’s warranty — and we specialise in HACCP-compliant systems. That means our team understands the food safety and compliance standards critical to restaurants, schools, hospitals, aged care homes, and food manufacturers. You can trust us to get the job done properly, on time, and with compliance front of mind.

Q: You volunteer on the boards of three charities and with the Red Cross. What keeps you involved?
Paul:
I’ve seen how important it is to show up when people are vulnerable — whether it’s after a natural disaster or helping a not-for-profit improve their governance. That’s part of my ethos. Business should be useful. My work with the Red Cross and charity boards keeps me grounded and reminds me of the bigger picture.

Q: Has Acro contributed to the community beyond your personal involvement?
Paul:
Yes — Acro has donated refrigeration equipment, labour, and service time to several charities and community organisations. We don’t promote it much — but we believe that if you’re in a position to help, you should. Whether it’s outfitting a food relief charity or ensuring a community kitchen stays operational, we quietly step in when it counts.

Q: What makes Acro different from other refrigeration contractors?
Paul:
We don’t just show up — we show up prepared. Our vans are fully stocked, our techs are licensed and insured, and we operate 24/7 with rapid response, often within 2 hours. We’re serious about delivering outcomes, not just completing jobs. Our systems are tight, our follow-up is strong, and our people are trained to solve problems — not just tick boxes.

Q: You’ve mentored young mechanical engineers. What’s the key lesson you pass on?
Paul:
Take responsibility. Technical knowledge matters, but real leadership comes from owning the result — understanding the client’s needs, applying critical thinking, and following through. That’s what turns a technician into a trusted professional.

Is Your Commercial Fridge or Display Cabinet Leaking Water?

Is Your Commercial Fridge or Display Cabinet Leaking Water?

A leaking commercial fridge or display cabinet in Brisbane, Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast isn’t just an inconvenience—it can lead to slippery floors, stock damage, and costly repairs. At Acro Refrigeration, we attend to dozens of these call-outs across Brisbane and the Gold Coast every month. The good news? Most water leaks are preventable with the right maintenance.

Common Causes of Water Leaks in Commercial Fridges

1. Blocked or Frozen Drain Line

One of the most common issues we see is a clogged or frozen drain line. Over time, food particles, debris, or even ice build-up can block the drain, causing water to overflow and leak onto the floor.

Signs to look for:

  • Water pooling under the fridge or cabinet

  • Ice build-up around the evaporator

  • Musty smell

Water leak pooling on the floor

2. Damaged Door Seals

If the door gaskets are cracked or loose, warm air gets in and causes excess condensation. That moisture has to go somewhere—and often ends up as a puddle.

Fix: Replacing the door seals is a quick and inexpensive solution that prevents bigger issues down the track.

3. Levelling Issues

If the fridge isn’t sitting level, water may not drain toward the outlet correctly. Instead, it can collect in one corner and eventually spill out.

4. Cracked or Overflowing Drain Pan

The drain pan collects condensation, but if it’s cracked, misaligned, or full due to poor evaporation, water will leak out. Regular inspections catch this early.

5. Fan Motor or Coil Issues

Faulty evaporator fans or dirty condenser coils can affect how efficiently your fridge removes moisture, which can lead to internal ice build-up and external leaks.

How to Prevent Water Leaks

Schedule regular preventative maintenance
✅ Clean the drain lines and check for obstructions
✅ Inspect door seals and gaskets
✅ Ensure correct fridge levelling
✅ Keep coils and fans clean
✅ Address small leaks early before they cause major damage

At Acro Refrigeration, we carry a wide range of parts in our service vehicles, so we can often fix leaks on the spot, preventing downtime and stock loss.
